CROSS PENS ON BBC’S GREAT AMERICAN RAILROAD JOURNEYS

While exploring New England, Great American Railroad Journeys made a special stop at Cross. Hosted by Michael Portillo, the series follows his travels across America’s historic railroads, guided by an Appleton’s General Travel Guide to the United States from 1879. Along the way, Michael visits bustling cities, quiet rural towns, and sites of historical significance, uncovering fascinating stories and meeting local experts—all while showcasing some of the most stunning railways in the world.

In this episode, Michael’s journey brings him to Providence, Rhode Island, where he stops by Cross—America’s oldest manufacturer of fine writing instruments.

In this special segment (3:07 - 8:21 in the episode), Michael takes a deep dive into the rich history of Cross. Joined by Cross employee and historian Andy Boss, he explores early Cross artifacts, including original pencil casings, a mechanical pencil, and a stylographic pen. Andy also shares the fascinating story of how Cross became the Official Pen of U.S. Presidents, a proud tradition that has continued for decades.

Michael then visits our workshop, where pen maker Kerry Nixon offers an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at how our top-tier writing instruments are made. From the premium materials we use—such as precious metals and high-quality finishes—to the intricate assembly process, Kerry highlights the thought and craftsmanship that makes every Cross pen truly special.

Michael even tries his hand at penmanship, experiencing firsthand the artistry and timeless appeal of writing with a Cross pen.
